Have you ever wanted something to work out so badly that you’ve thought about it constantly?
Perhaps you’ve worried about the outcome of a situation, tried to find answers or gone over the same thing in your head a hundred times.
I think we’ve probably all been there!
And sometimes, the more we try to control something, the more frustrated and exhausted we become.
This is where the spiritual idea of surrender comes in.
But what does surrender actually mean?
πΈ Surrender Doesn’t Mean Giving Up
I think this is one of the biggest misunderstandings about surrender.
When we hear the word, we might imagine waving a white flag, admitting defeat or simply allowing life to happen without doing anything about it.
But that’s not really what spiritual surrender is about.
It’s more about recognising the difference between what we can influence and what we simply cannot control.
We can make choices, take action, speak up for ourselves and do our very best.
But we can’t always decide how things will turn out.
And sometimes, accepting that can bring an enormous sense of relief.
Surrender isn’t about giving up on life. It’s about loosening our grip on how we think life should unfold.
πΏ Why Do We Find It So Difficult to Let Go?
Well, for one thing, most of us like a little certainty!
We want to know what’s going to happen, how something will turn out and whether everything is going to be okay.
And when we don’t know, our minds can go into overdrive.
We replay conversations, imagine different scenarios and try to prepare ourselves for every possible outcome.
As though worrying about something enough might somehow give us more control over it!
If only it worked like that. π€£
But sometimes all that thinking simply leaves us feeling more unsettled.
And that’s where learning to surrender can be helpful.
β¨ What Does Surrender Mean Spiritually?
For me, spiritual surrender is about trust.
Trusting that I don’t have to understand everything that’s happening in my life at the very moment it’s happening.
Trusting myself to deal with things as they arise.
And being open to the possibility that life might unfold differently from how I’d imagined.
Some people describe surrender as trusting the Universe, Source, God or a higher power.
Others simply see it as accepting uncertainty and learning to live more peacefully with it.
I think there’s room for both.
You don’t have to believe in anything particular to recognise how exhausting it can be to constantly fight against things you cannot change.
Sometimes surrender is simply saying, “I’ve done what I can. Now I’m going to allow things to unfold.”
ποΈ Surrender Doesn’t Mean Accepting Everything
This is an important one.
Surrender doesn’t mean staying in situations that make us unhappy, allowing people to treat us badly or ignoring our own needs.
You can surrender to the uncertainty of a situation while still having boundaries.
You can trust the process while still making decisions.
And you can let go of trying to control another person’s behaviour while choosing what you’ll accept in your own life.
There’s a big difference between accepting what is happening and believing you have no choices.
You can let go without giving away your power.
πΌ How Can We Practise Surrender in Everyday Life?
It doesn’t have to involve hours of meditation or anything particularly complicated.
Sometimes it begins with noticing when we’re trying a little too hard to make something happen.
Perhaps we could:
β¨ Take a few slow breaths when our thoughts start racing
β¨ Ask ourselves what we can actually do about a situation
β¨ Accept that we don’t always have all the answers
β¨ Stop replaying conversations we cannot change
β¨ Allow other people to make their own choices
β¨ Remind ourselves that not everything needs sorting out today
And when something is genuinely within our control, we can take whatever action feels right.
Surrender and action can work beautifully together.
π Making Peace With Not Knowing
I think one of the hardest parts of being human is not knowing what’s around the corner.
We make plans, have hopes and imagine how we’d like things to turn out.
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But life has a funny way of surprising us, doesn’t it?
Sometimes things don’t work out the way we’d hoped, only for us to realise much later that a different path opened up.
Of course, not every difficult experience comes with a hidden blessing, and we don’t have to pretend that it does.
Sometimes life is simply hard.
But even then, we can learn to be a little gentler with ourselves rather than feeling we have to figure everything out immediately.
π· A Gentle Reflection
Perhaps there’s something in your life at the moment that you’ve been holding onto a little too tightly.
Something you’ve been worrying about, trying to change or desperately wanting an answer to.
Maybe ask yourself:
Have I done what I reasonably can?
Is there anything else I genuinely need to do?
Or is it time to stop trying to control the outcome?
You don’t have to stop caring.
You don’t have to stop hoping.
And you certainly don’t have to give up on yourself.
Sometimes surrender is simply giving yourself permission to put down a worry you’ve been carrying for far too long.
Do what you can, trust yourself with what comes next, and allow a little room for life to surprise you.
With love and blessings, as always. ππ»β¨
